One of the advantages of having a long and purposeful failed public education system, where abysmal English language skills are only matched by equally atrocious math skills is that the Los Angeles Times reporter Jason Song can write an article entitled, "L.A. schools chief cuts his own pay" and fewer people are left with enough critical thinking skills to question either the linguistic sophistry or fuzzy math that Song uses to arrive at his conclusion in complete derogation of what has actually taken place.

The fable goes something like this: Gates Foundation's John Deasy is given the job of Superintendent of LAUSD to replace Ramon Cortines at $330,000 a year with no other candidates for the position. Ramon Cortines has been paid $250,000 a year, if you don't count his generous benefits package and the $150,000 a year he also made from Scholastics for 10 years in a clear conflict of interest that LAUSD Board President Monica Garcia told him not to worry about, even though LAUSD had $16 million a year in contracts with Scholastics. As we have seen elsewhere lately, it just seems like some people are above the law.

Other than presiding over the dismantling of what remains of public education, Ramon Cortines has been completely ineffectual in turning around the longstanding and premeditated academic failure that has seen no deviation given LAUSD's ongoing and unquestioned administrative policies, which continue to recycle of the same old edspeak platitudes about "everybody is going to college," when the reality is that LAUSD continues to see over 50% of its students drop out before graduation with no consequence to administration. I guess  somebody's got to be the fall guy and that's where teachers seem to come in.

Given LAUSD's administrative record, one can only be flabbergasted that the sole approach for making things better still presupposes that teachers are the problem with no evidence to support this contention. Asking the obvious question as to how any teacher with a single subject credential is supposed to teach students who are many years behind grade level due to an unquestioned and continuing administrative policy of social promotion doesn't seem to occur to either Deasy or his predecessors who want teachers effectiveness to be judged by how well they can teach students whose subjective levels make them uneducable in the grades that LAUSD administration has pushed them into.

Has this same approach, as has been implemented by Ramon Cortines and his predecessors, been worth $250,000 a year and if so by what measure? John Deasey is already being paid more than Cortines at $275,000 a year as Assistant Superintendent. How is this justified when 7000 teachers have been given "Rifs" (Reduction in forces) and where it is likely that 4500 will actually lose their jobs, potentially pushing class size to over 60 students per class.

It's a safe bet that John Deasey can eschew the bonus that his present contract offers if student test scores and assessment do better, since there is little likelihood that this diffrent result can come from doing the same thing that his predecessors have done. Isn't that also a good definition for insanity, where one expects a different result when continuing to do the same things that have cause failure in the past.

So here's the way the scam really works: Deasy is said to be given $330,000 a year, which is s 32% raise over what Cortines was getting with no consideration that everywhere else in LAUSD draconian cuts in all employee sectors of the budget are calling into question whether LAUSD can realistically function as anything more than daycare, given the more than $400 million in cuts for just this year. When is it fair to say, given this scenario, that LAUSD can no longer function as a viable system of public education?

Even with the blackout in the mainstream media of most criticism of LAUSD, the absurdity of Deasy's inflated $330,000 compensation package has not waned at least on the Internet. So now, Deasy who is already making $275,000 as Assistant Superintendent, a 10% increase over Cortines' and $25,000 more than NYC's superintendent, agrees that this will also be his compensation as LAUSD superintendent.

So instead of him getting a 10% raise over Cortines, Jason Song of the L.A. TImes unquestioningly goes along with the numbers hype and says beneficent John Deasy has agreed to take 17% less, which makes him out as a good guy, who is sensitive to the cuts and loss of livelihood of so many dedicated LAUSD certificated and classified staff, who do not have the luxury of playing with reality and math that Deasy and Song have.

By the way, Deasy's final salary of $275,000 is actually 16.66% less than what the LAUSD Board hired him at, but 17% sounds much better and we all know that LAUSD is about the sound and not the fury that they have unleashed in so many lives.

And finally, let's hear it for outgoing UTLA President A.J. Duffy, who statement in support of Deasy, "Bravo, John, you did the right thing," might just help him out when he applies to LAUSD for a job after he finishes at the union...or is that finishes the union?

If administrators don't come to school, school goes on. If even 1/3 of teachers and classified staff don't come to school, school is over. Here is hoping that you act, while you still can.

Susan Lee Schwartz Suffern, New York

Susan studied literacy education, English literature, and fine arts and holds a BA ('63) and MS ('65) from Brooklyn College, and has the equivalent of two master's degrees, earned in graduate studies of literacy, arts and education. She taught literacy skills and art, for four decades in NYC in elementary and secondary school.  In 1998 she won the New York State English Council (NYSEC) Educator of Excellence Award  for her successful teacher practice, studied by Harvard  and the LRDC at the University of Pittsburgh for the New Standards research. At the end of her research, her unique curriculum was selected by the LRDC to be used in their national staff development seminars for school superintendents. She was among six teachers -- from among the thousands across the nation-- observed during the research project, and her teaching practice met all the  principles of learning. In the nineties, she rose to prominence in national educational circles, while teaching at a new magnet school, East Side Middle School. The reading scores of her seventh grade students were at the top of the city, and on the first ELA, which two thirds of city students failed, her former students (then in the eight grade) were TENTH IN THE STATE.

 She writes often about what she learned about the genuine standards for learning, in an attempt to begin a national conversation about the authentic standards, so that there can be genuine reform. Her experience that ended her fine career in the NYC Public Schools has led her to write about the process that removed the top educators, silencing the voices of the classroom practitioners who would not accept anti-learning policies. Her essay here on Perdaily,  is one that describes this process. HER STORY:
"I know first hand the financial, personal, emotional and physical damage that can result when school administrators, the Montana Education Association and the National Education Association put their own interests above the students, teachers and the taxpayers of the State of Montana My files contain mountains of paperwork including depositions, declarations of truth, notarized documents and exhibits resulting from an arduous legal process that finally ended when the Havre (Montana) School District settled two lawsuits - a Federal suit and one filed in State District Court. These documents also include a letter from a union representative stating, " This is nothing more than a witch hunt." Yet the union continued to allow the school administration to harass, bully and bring harm to me.
These two lawsuits resulted from a single incident that, had it been handled differently and under the light of public scrutiny, would not have snowballed into awards of more than $200,000 worth of damages. Funds that eventually came from the taxpayers' pockets. Ironically, as a taxpayer in Hill County, my family and I are helping to pay for the damages awarded to me. This covered the attorneys' fees. The settlement did not include my attorney fees, however the district, insurance and taxpayers paid the defendants attorney bills, which exceeded mine. The settlement was made on March 2, 2006."

Una de las ventajas de tener una larga y útil sistema fracasado la educación pública, en pésimas habilidades del lenguaje Inglés son sólo igualado por igual de las habilidades matemáticas atroz es que Los Angeles Times Jason canción puede escribir un artículo titulado, "Escuelas de Los Ángeles cortes jefe de su propio sueldo" y menos personas se quedan con suficiente capacidad de pensamiento crítico a la pregunta o la sofistería lingüísticas o matemáticas borrosas canción que utiliza para llegar a su conclusión una derogación completa de lo que realmente ha tenido lugar.

La pregunta obvia de cómo un maestro con licencia solo tema se supone que debe enseñar a los estudiantes que son muchos años detrás del nivel de grado, debido a una política administrativa incuestionable y permanente de promoción social no parece ocurrir a cualquiera de sus predecesores Deasy o que quieren eficacia de los maestros para ser juzgado por lo bien que puede enseñar a los estudiantes cuyos niveles subjetivos que sean educables en los grados que la administración del LAUSD ha empujado a.

Tiene el mismo enfoque, como se ha implementado por Ramón Cortines y sus predecesores, ha sido un valor de $ 250,000 al año y si es así por lo que medir? Se graduó  con honores en 1963 de Oak Park River Forest High School de Oak Park,  Illinois, y con honores de la Universidad de Illinois, Champaign donde obtuvo un B.A. en la Educación Primaria en 1966. Enseñó la escuela primaria de cuatro años en Berwyn y Hillside, Illinois, así como Phoenix, Arizona, antes de comenzar una familia. Ella sintió el llamado para enseñar a los estudiantes de primaria para que pudiera compartir su fuerza en preparar a los niños para tener éxito como estudiantes y como ciudadanos, objetivos que ella cree que requieren talentosos maestros a realizar. Susan Lee Schwartz Suffern, Nueva York

Susan estudió la alfabetización, la literatura Inglés, y las bellas artes y tiene una licenciatura (63) y MS (65) en el Brooklyn College, y tiene el equivalente a dos grados de maestría, obtuvo en los estudios de postgrado de la alfabetización, las artes y la educación. Ella enseña las habilidades de alfabetización y el arte, desde hace cuatro décadas en Nueva York en la escuela primaria y secundaria. En 1998 ganó el estado de Nueva York Consejo Inglés (NYSEC) Educador del Premio a la Excelencia de  su práctica docente con éxito, estudió en Harvard y en la LRDC la Universidad de Pittsburgh para la investigación de nuevos estándares. Al final de su investigación, su plan de estudios único fue seleccionado por el LRDC para ser utilizado en sus seminarios nacionales de desarrollo del personal para directores de escuelas. "En primer lugar, conocer de cerca los recursos financieros, personal, emocional y los daños físicos que pueden resultar cuando los administradores de la escuela, el Montana, la Asociación de Educación y la Asociación Nacional de Educación puso  sus propios intereses por encima de los estudiantes, los profesores y los contribuyentes de el Estado de Montana Mis archivos contienen montañas de papeles incluyendo declaraciones, las declaraciones de la verdad, documentos notariales y exposiciones como resultado de un arduo proceso legal que finalmente terminó cuando el Havre (Montana) del Distrito Escolar se establecieron dos demandas - una demanda federal y una presentada en la Corte de Distrito del Estado. Estos documentos también incluyen una carta de un representante del sindicato diciendo: "Esto no es más que una  caza de brujas. "Sin embargo, el sindicato continuó permitiendo la administración de la escuela  para acosar, intimidar y hacer daño a mí.
Estas dos demandas resultado de un solo incidente que, de haber sido manejado de manera diferente y bajo la luz del escrutinio público, no han crecido en los premios de más de $ 200,000 dólares en daños y perjuicios.
