The Guerilla Teachers Handbook Part 1 by Espiritu Makiguchi

(For a national view of public education reform see the end of this blog post)

The term "Guerrilla" is Spanish for "little war."  It originated in the Napoleonic Wars.  The French took over Spain.  A "Guerrillero" was a soldier in the Spanish Rebel Army.  However, during the Battle of Puebla, in Mexico, the French met a new soldier.  This soldier did not fight in the conventional style of standing in straight lines and firing volleys of rifle fire at each other until one side dominated.   This soldier hid in the bushes, behind rocks, inside buildings, up in trees and any other convenient hiding location.  The attack would occur after careful planning, and the proper respect for time.  The tactics employed by guerrillas date back to the ideas of Sun Tzu who wrote The Art of War.  In this book he demonstrates how your small group could beat a larger army.  He argued that you use your carefully planned and timed strength to exploit the weakness of the enemy.  In our case, it is the small cadre of teachers versus the vast resources of LAUSD and school districts like it throughout the country.  This is intended to give you a heads up regarding the disgusting tactics public school administrators utilize to harass, push you out, stress you out and eventually, if they have their way, terminate your employment (taking your long earned benefits away from you).  This knowledge will give you power, especially if you find yourself in a "housed" aka rubber room status.

The Principal is not your friend.

Unbeknownst to you, the principal of a school is trained in how to harass and eventually fire you.  In my experience, anytime you oppose the principal you end up on the "black list."  This list will comprise those people who speak out for reform, leaders who are supported by the local community or politicians, or representatives of your union.   Essentially, all the people who make the principal's job harder.  The Local School Leadership Council is an arena where administrators, teachers, and parents work together to improve their school.  However, many times the principal uses this as the forum to launch ideas promoted by the district.  Many times these ideas impede the educational program:  more tests, more collection of data, more waste of precious educational minutes.

Once, you have established yourself as an educational leader who sides with the community, as a leader who employs "secret balloting" to allow true voting, as a protector of student development, you will become a target of the administration.  They will use psychological tactics to demoralize, intimidate, institutionalize, bully, undermine your authority, and create mental stressors which basically serve to "push you out" of the organization. In addition, the principal will start hitting you with charges where for the first time the documentation says it can lead to your dismissal from the district.

The public school administrator is not accountable for his/her actions.  In fact, in California Government Code Section 821.6 permits them to "maliciously" bring false charges against you , while receiving immunity from prosecution.  Another interesting fact can be explained through the following examples:  Scenario 1: Cafeteria Manager X has only one friend at work- the principal.  Why?  Because everyday X makes her the best salads, soups, and sandwiches.  The result is that Cafeteria Manager X now thinks her status is above reproach.  She yells at co-workers, adults, parents, teachers and even students.  One day the union representative for the teachers reports her to the principal who does nothing.  He reports her to the administration.  They do nothing.  He reports her to her immediate supervisor.  This supervisor comes in, has a meeting with Cafeteria Manager X who is extremely apologetic and remorseful for her behavior.  Cafeteria Manager X gets a promotion.

Scenario 2: At a High School in Los Angeles one day, an assistant principal has sex with a female student.  He gets reprimanded and transferred to a middle school where he has sex with a second student.  This one is finally behind bars.

Scenario 3: In another Los Angeles School the school principal and the assistant principal both plead guilty to failure to report child abuse (which is a violation of criminal codes and education codes).  They were suspended but then later returned to work.  The principal was later promoted to a position of director.

You have to ask yourself, if any of these true incidents happened to a teacher, would we have been promoted?  Would we have been able to return to work?  In other words there exists an obvious disparity in treatment.

Karen Horwitz Chicago, Illinois

wccbook@gmail.com

Former award winning teacher who co-founded NAPTA, National Association for the Prevention of Teacher Abuse, and wrote the book White Chalk Crime: The REAL Reason Schools Fail to expose how teacher harassment and terrorization maintains a system of deeply hidden corruption. Disposing of dedicated teachers forms the core of the White Chalk Criminal's agenda since dedication and white collar crime do not mix. Given that all agree that good teachers are essential to good teaching, a system that cannot tolerate good teachers is worthless. This is what we have in place. With Bernie Madoff-like leaders - he was as much about investing as our school leaders are about educating - anointed with unlimited power, including the ability to fill the airwaves with propaganda, education is no longer about education. It is about money and power for those who play a very corrupt game and with an agenda of privatizing schools so their power will increase. (Privatization may have merits. NAPTA does not take a position on that. But privatizing a system that is rotten to its core - where quality teaching cannot survive, where a cover up of pretense that they do not know this despite so many of us reporting these truths prevails - documents that those advocating privatization cannot be trusted! It shows they want our schools for their own interests, not the children, nor the community.)  NAPTA welcomes parents, teachers, students, citizens or anyone who understands that without a real system of education, we no longer have a democracy. Membership is free. Go to: EndTeacherAbuse.org  or WhiteChalkCrime.com. Become educated about what is going on.

Susan Lee Schwartz Suffern, New York

Susan studied literacy education, English literature, and fine arts and holds a BA ('63) and MS ('65) from Brooklyn College, and has the equivalent of two master's degrees, earned in graduate studies of literacy, arts and education. She taught literacy skills and art, for four decades in NYC in elementary and secondary school.  In 1998 she won the New York State English Council (NYSEC) Educator of Excellence Award  for her successful teacher practice, studied by Harvard  and the LRDC at the University of Pittsburgh for the New Standards research. At the end of her research, her unique curriculum was selected by the LRDC to be used in their national staff development seminars for school superintendents. She was among six teachers -- from among the thousands across the nation-- observed during the research project, and her teaching practice met all the  principles of learning. In the nineties, she rose to prominence in national educational circles, while teaching at a new magnet school, East Side Middle School. The reading scores of her seventh grade students were at the top of the city, and on the first ELA, which two thirds of city students failed, her former students (then in the eight grade) were TENTH IN THE STATE.

She writes often about what she learned about the genuine standards for learning, in an attempt to begin a national conversation about the authentic standards, so that there can be genuine reform. Her experience that ended her fine career in the NYC Public Schools has led her to write about the process that removed the top educators, silencing the voices of the classroom practitioners who would not accept anti-learning policies. Her essay here on Perdaily,  is one that describes this process. Read more as she talks about education, literacy  and learning on her site, from the perspective of the experienced teacher-practitioner of pedagogy. She is the voice of dedicated and talented classroom teachers who know why the schools are failing.

HER STORY:
"I know first hand the financial, personal, emotional and physical damage that can result when school administrators, the Montana Education Association and the National Education Association put their own interests above the students, teachers and the taxpayers of the State of Montana My files contain mountains of paperwork including depositions, declarations of truth, notarized documents and exhibits resulting from an arduous legal process that finally ended when the Havre (Montana) School District settled two lawsuits - a Federal suit and one filed in State District Court. These documents also include a letter from a union representative stating, " This is nothing more than a witch hunt." Yet the union continued to allow the school administration to harass, bully and bring harm to me.
These two lawsuits resulted from a single incident that, had it been handled differently and under the light of public scrutiny, would not have snowballed into awards of more than $200,000 worth of damages. Funds that eventually came from the taxpayers' pockets. Ironically, as a taxpayer in Hill County, my family and I are helping to pay for the damages awarded to me. This covered the attorneys' fees. The settlement did not include my attorney fees, however the district, insurance and taxpayers paid the defendants attorney bills, which exceeded mine. The settlement was made on March 2, 2006."

No hacen nada.

"Http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dr-Jim-Taylor/125893225652

"Espiritu Makiguchi." For your information, it means "Spirit of Makiguchi." Tsunesaburo Makiguchi was a great humanitarian of japanese descent. He was an educator who believed in "helping the common people." In an aristocratic place like Japan, that was an uncommon thing to do. But Makiguchi taught that "one should never blindly follow authority." He was imprisoned by the Thought Police. After cruel interrogations and punishment he died from malnutrition. Like targeted LAUSD teacher, he too was a martyr. Thanks to him, the philosophy of hope continues helping people to this day. It has helped me abundantly.

The details in your scenarios are too polite. In the case of Steve Roony an AP at a HS in Watts, his relationship with a student exploded into a confrontation with the girl's father. He was waving a gun and issuing threats but because he was a white professional and the father was of color living in the projects , cops apparently did nothing more than alert LAUSD that there was an issue. We know the police often work with LAUSD when felonious teachers are apprehended . And innocent ones as well; in one case an angry teacher went outside his home one night to quiet a noisy dog. He was in his boxers, cussing , an officer came along and an argument ensued. When the man in boxers protested' "I am a teacher!" the officer called his principal the following morning and the teacher was held hostage in a rubber room. He was suddenly anpervert because he was in his boxers outside yelling at a barking ddo. I have been there. Most of us have. That devestated teachervdied before he could clear his name. Lausd likes this even better than resignations, and he's not the only teacher to die because of the stress inflicted upon them by district despots.
Rooney, however was an administrator and above the law. Apparently Indulging yourself in sexually deviant impulses is ok when it comes at the expense of poor black and Latino kids.
Rooneys's director decided the situation would escalate protected his colleague reflexively, and promoted Rooney to Principal of a hood middle school. Pervse logic would see this as evidence of Rooney's innocence if a lawsuit was filed as reason tells us Lausd would never promote a predetor. Charges and claims would likely be dismissed as the fabrication of a low rent con.
Rooney is a brute who shared Berndt and Hernandez' astute skills and col cunning knowing which child was most vulnerable and ingratiating himself within the folds of his supervisor's cronyism.
Men will often rationalize that these teenage girls are wanton, too hard to resist. It's not entirely bogus, and she did consent to have sex with him. It's still very wrong but not as wrong as what he did next ( note other girls are surfacing to assert they too were victims) But the girl Rooney chose one Saturday afternoon when the kids came for English lessons was 12. She barely spoke English and he pegged her as an "illegal " when he offered her a ride home.
She was probably too obedient to say no too innocent to think he would harm her, but he drove her to his trendy condo downtown, had his way with her for hours, and dumped her off not far from her home, smug in his confidence that the girl would never tell.
She told, her parents went to police and he was arrested. So was his director. Now both are in prison where they should rot.
Many administrators get caught embezzling money, using very poor judgement and mistreating teachers so lawlessly the district cannot ignore the problem.
They are promoted to desk jobs. They have no duties. They sit and play solitaire or start online businesses and collect their $100k+ salery with benefits, they retire with a full pension and no one finds out about their transgressions. Of course, some are victims of punitive officials who will not dismiss them but make their status well known. You can tell who they are because they are treated with the same contempt as innocent teachers, singled out for ridicule and not at ease the way your guilty detainees tend to be,
I feel it's important to add that there are some ethical administrators who are committed to our mission as educators. As a rule they spent a lot of time teaching in the trenches and work harder than anyone. I've worked with these kinds of school leaders and it's another world where Socratic discourse is facilitated, collaboration is fruitful, discipline is prudent and fair. Teachers are on task but satisfied and students feel safe and inspired. These administrators also suffer . They are victimized by ageism, sexism and punished for success that some one else will take the credit for.
There is no defined hierarchy of misconduct much less consequences for them. The suits make it upnas they go along..
A teacher kicks and hits a special needs child not once but twice and gets a mere five days unpaid suspension. Another's students tell administrators she's been smoking pot in class daily. The suits and lapd rejects search the teacher's class immediately. There is no sign of marijuana,, but the teacher next door says she smells it often, but assumes its students. Anyone working at an urban HS knows the pungent smoke is a given ; in a HS setting, Kids sling nickel bags and make lunch apples into pipes to pass along tin bathrooms.
Half the staff goes home with the smell of weed clinging to their clothes.
The low rent cop claims he's seen the teacher online looking at a site about marijuana arrests which is funny, as this state legalized medical marijuana and anyone can get a card for $60. It makes no sense a teacher takes such a foolish risk. Moreover she was never arrested. But the principal decided to take the word of a few surly miscreants and suspended this teacher 15 career crushing days and transferred her and the damning charge to another HS. She wasn't rubber roomed because she teaches math quite well. One more reason to doubt her stoner status. But can you see the disconnect here? There are no standards of evidence, no statute to explicate the seriousness of the charge. I would prefer mynchild have a teacher who smokes weed than a teacher who gets violent with students when she loses it.
I know one thing.: my kid will never ever attend an Lausd school. And I will never work in one again unless there is a miracle that restores it to its former glory.
What seems more likely is a charter movement resurrecting itself in the way it orinally had, with disgusted teachers forming small schools that offer themes and unique pedagogical approaches like Enviormental Charter HS in Lawndale and Constellation MS in LB where my son is taking classes in back of St Anthony's and loving school again. Both humble campuses are operated by teachers and have over a decade of success under their belts despite limited resources and opposition from school districts who want the funding for themselves . If by some grace of gods I prevail in my efforts to bring Lausd to justice, I will use my settlement to start a charter school for troubled teens that emphasizes arts and the greater good. .
I can think of no better revenge than doing the right thing and doing it well.
