LAUSD- IF CHARTERS DON'T WORK, JUST LIE AND SAY THEY DO

Joseph Goebbels.jpeg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) Professor Diane Ravitch calls it "the dominant narrative." The incessant litany in the media that says the only things wrong with public education are bad teachers and not enough charter schools. Nazi Reich Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels called this same kind of dominant narrative the big lie : "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." What good public education is about is truth. Not a single truth, but the individual truth that comes from a all students being educated to their highest potential. If you thwart this education by establishing a privatized dumbed down public education system, you have created the best mechanism for implementing Goebbels big lie on the largest scale.

LAUSD; HOW CRENSHAW STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND TEACHERS CAN FINALLY SUCCEED

Crenshaw Cougars.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) There was a meeting last week at the Radical Women center for the Crenshaw Cougar Coalition to discuss how to address the attack on Crenshaw High School by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and its proposed reconstitution of the school. Although Beatriz Paez, who chaired the meeting, said they were interested in formulating a plan to address the proposed reconstitution, along with magnets, and ultimate privatization/charterization of Crenshaw. When all was said and done by the end of the meeting, it was clear that those running the meeting did not have a clue how to proceed. And even though they said they were interested in hearing about viable elements of such a plan, the reality of this meeting showed a complete unwillingness to develop a more pragmatic approach where the community would take responsibility for Crenshaw based on framing the students, parents, and teachers vision of what an excellent public education would look like at Crenshaw. While the Crenshaw High School community might not presently have such a clear and concise vision, the networking necessary to achieve it is well within their grasp, if they deign to reach out from this long segregated community.

WHY DO TEACHERS PERSIST IN TRYING TO CONVINCE LAUSD OF THINGS THAT NOT EVEN LAUSD BELIEVES ARE TRUE?

Virginia Mc Martin.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) Educated teachers, parents, and even most students knows that 2 + 2 = 4 and yet the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) keep insisting that it equals 5...or sometimes even 3. Then why do teachers continue arguing with them, since to do so only gives the irrational credibility through teachers and others entering into this stupid argument with a district and union that know 2 +2=4, but only insist it doesn't, because it is to their advantage in terms of money and uncontested power- think Broad, Gates, Walton, privatization and dumbing down of America to a place where few have the intellectual ability to question authority. This was George Orwell's prescient view of his future and our present that you might be aware of, if LAUSD hasn't already taken its toll on your higher brain function.

LAUSD'S FANTASY REFORMS CONTINUE BREWING THE LATINO "FIRE NEXT TIME"

The Fire Next Time.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) "Do I really want to be integrated into a burning house?" ― James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time It occurs to me that in the discussion of what it will take to fix public education in the United States and to stem the downward spiral of our society, there are few other than inner city teachers and their students that actually have the slightest idea of the demoralizing reality we presently face on a daily basis in our schools. People outside and even many within remain blind to this reality. Furthermore, it is hard for dedicated teachers to defend themselves under the present onslaught of attacks motivated by the privatization juggernaut without resorting to language that is considered improper in polite society. Alas, this conundrum that teachers face with no help from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is not a place presently fit for education to take place.

WHY THE PLAS EXPERIMENT MUST END AT ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL, Part II: THE NEW EAST LA CLASSIC: ROOSEVELT (PLAS) vs. GARFIELD (NON PLAS) by John Fernandez

John Fernandez.jpg
Mensaje se repite en Español) The Rivals The NEW EAST LA CLASSIC is about academics--not about football. It pits Roosevelt High School against Garfield High School. Roosevelt High School is under the Mayor's Partnership for Los Angeles Schools (PLAS). Roosevelt became a PLAS school on December 7, 2007, when teachers and parents voted 152-62 to become a PLAS school. Roosevelt High School currently has 2,900 students, of which 99% are Mexican/Latino. Roosevelt has a large immigrant student population, with a substantial number of English language learners (ELLs). Roosevelt has a faculty of 170. The Roosevelt faculty is represented by United Teachers-Los Angeles (UTLA). Roosevelt is made up of seven independent small schools with their own principal. An eighth principal oversees the seven schools. Roosevelt has no assistant principals or lead teachers. Roosevelt's six independent small schools, not counting the magnet school have an API for 2012 from 544 to 672. Roosevelt is located in Bole Heights, a heavily Mexican/Latino working-class community.

LAUSD: Follow The Money by Joseph K

Follow the money.jpg
Mensaje se repite en Español) I have to do this my way. You tell me what you know, and I'll confirm. I'll keep you in the right direction if I can, but that's all. Just... follow the money. -Deep Throat, "All the President's Men" (1976) If you want to know the direction LAUSD School Board President Monica Garcia and new candidate Kate Anderson want to take the Los Angeles School District after the upcoming election, then follow the money. In this case following the money isn't difficult because there is just so damn much of it. Start with an astounding quarter of a million dollars by Eli Broad, Superintendent Deasy's mentor and puppet master, and another quarter million by fellow billionaire, Latino media magnate A. Jerrold Perenchio, formerly of Univision. Together they pushed "their" Coalition for School Reform's coffers to $1.5 million. Then Mayor Villaraigosa who, along with Broad, was instrumental in bringing Deasy to LAUSD, called in the really big gun by brokering a deal with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who contributed an additional million dollars for the Coalition -money education historian Diane Ravitch called this "repugnant and an affront to democracy."

UTLA BACKS DOWN ON SURVEY ON LAUSD SUPERINTENDENT DEASY- PERDAILY COMES TO THE RESCUE

Survey.jpg
United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) has backed down on their plan to poll rank-and-file on the effectiveness of Superintendent John Deasy, so we at perdaily would like to take on this function. In addition to the following questions designed to ascertain the qualifications, honesty, and effectiveness of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in general and Superintendent John Deasy more specifically, we would like you to use the comment section below to propose your own questions, which we will add to this survey. Then, copy and paste your answers to the survey into an email and send it to: Lenny@perdaily.com and we will publish the results, if we get enough of a response. What does the 99% really think?

THE ASSAULT: ON PUBLIC EDUCATION, ON TEACHERS, AND ON DUE PROCESS by Susan Lee Schwartz

Susan Lee Schwartz 1.jpeg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) Many years have passed, Lenny Isenberg, since you and I talked about breaking the enormous silence that surrounds the assault on teachers, -- the first round in ending the national institution of public education. In order to lie and rewrite history, an uninformed ignorant citizenry is required. To citizens who know The Constitution as the Founding Fathers envisioned it, the liars and ranters who fill the media with their outrageous false narratives would be unable to hold sway.

LAUSD & UTLA - A MODEST PROPOSAL FOR QUANTIFIABLE ACCOUNTABILITY

LAUSD logo.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español). LAUSD seems to really understand the mentality of teachers- we keep preaching to the choir, while it- with the help of UTLA leadership and bureaucracy- do nothing to stop the dismantling of the teaching profession and the decimation of our students and their families. My mantra is that if what we do and what we say can be ignored by LAUSD/UTLA with impunity, then it's not worth doing. With that in mind, there are several areas where we can do things that cannot be ignored, if we are willing to do something more than talk in what has amount up until now as one long staff development- and we all know that they too never come to fruition:

WHY THE PARTNERSHIP FOR LOS ANGELES SCHOOLS (PLAS) EXPERIMENT MUST END AT ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL by JOHN FERNANDEZ

John Fernandez.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) On December 7, 2007 teachers and parents voted 152-62 in favor of the Mayor's Partnership for Los Angeles Schools (PLAS) to work "collaboratively" with teachers, parents, classified staff, and students to increase student achievement at Roosevelt High School. After 5-years, PLAS is a dismal failure at Roosevelt High School.

Privatization of Public Education: Strategies, Players, & Profits Part 2 by Steve Zeltzer

Steve Zeltzer.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) Over the last 30 years, a massive coordinated campaign has been funded to undermine public education through charters, trigger laws and pushing testing scores, and - most recently - online education that will eliminate teachers, which will funnel more profits to computer companies and billionaire entrepreneurs, including convicted felon Michael Milken. The aim appears to be to make money from turning public education into a profit center for their investments. The Milken institute for example is behind K12 inc. (LRN), the largest U.S. operator of taxpayer-funded online schools and is a publicly traded company with major holdings by Knowledge Universe, owned by felon Milken, his brother Lowell and Larry Ellison, billionaire owner of Oracle in San Francisco.
