MAYBE LAUSD CAN'T TEACH CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS BECAUSE IT DOESN'T USE THEM

Blazing Saddles.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) It is virtually impossible to have an intelligent discussion of what needs to be done to finally fix the Los Angeles Unified School District's (LAUSD) generationally failed public education system, if those in power and addressing the problem continue to accept without any critical analysis the unsubstantiated, misleading, and often downright dishonesty claims, demands, and policies of Superintendent John Deasy and his predecessors and likely successors. It is disheartening to see a virtuoso like Deasy playing the intellectually challenged LAUSD Board where in every interaction they lose by uncritically buying into everything he says without any relevant questioning. As regrettable as this is, after so many years of watching this one-sided process, it is not surprising because the LAUSD Board is not alone in their failure to apply any critical analysis to what Deasy spouts without any factual support.

DEASY'S RESIGNATION IS JUST ANOTHER TACTIC TO AVOID REAL SCRUTINY AT LAUSD

Smiling John Deasy.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) For the last 4 years, this blog has always tried to address various aspects of LAUSD dysfunctionality and not the latest joker that the Board puts in place to implement its extremely flawed and longstanding model of top-down education that has shown no improvement for generations. LAUSD administration as constituted has never been held accountable to the poor and minority children and their families that are now the majority in our Los Angeles society. Whether it be Romer, Brewer, Cortines, or Deasy, there will always be the latest political, Black, Latino, White hope for maintaining the status quo- whatever it takes- where there is no place for poor children of color to live up to their potential as the rule and not the rare exception that defies the odds. Rather than relax on the news of Deasy's resignation, which will surely be followed by another superintendent cut from the same privatizing-blame-teachers LAUSD-Broad-Gates agenda, both teachers and parents need to redouble their efforts to continue pushing for a complete reorganization of LAUSD into an accountable entity where this destructive nonsense is no longer tolerated or possible.

WHY DOES UTLA CONTINUE TO SUPPORT LAUSD'S VIOLATION OF CALIFORNIA TEACHER DISMISSAL PROCESS?

David Holmquist.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) After being placed in the District's North Teacher Detention Center (teacher Jail), although he faced no charges by the local policing authority, the teacher, Jim Hill, was subject of an administrative review conducted by Linda Del Cueto, the former local superintendent and highest-ranking official in the San Fernando Valley, who recently was demoted and reassigned to an administrative post in the Central Office of Curriculum and Instruction. While Superintendent in the South Area, Del Cueto was informed by parents that teacher Robert Pimentel was molesting their daughters at George De La Torre Elementary School, but did nothing. She allowed a known child predator to be taken by a crony administrator from school site to school site, where he continued to molest students. Yet, in this case, based on no credible evidence, Del Cueto issued a recommendation of dismissal for a teacher who had never received any prior negative parent complaints or poor performance evaluation.

CHIEF LAUSD ATTORNEY DAVID HOLMQUIST- ABOVE THE LAW?

Above the law.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) I feel like I'm living in The Twilight Zone when LAUSD's Chief Attorney David Holmquist can get away with the following statements and neither Reporter Barbara Jones of the Daily News, UTLA, or any other entity charged under law with defending the legal rights of teachers takes any exception with Holmquist putting LAUSD above the law by irrevocably determining that a teacher once charged by LAUSD who has been found innocent by the Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH) can never go back to teaching: http://www.dailynews.com/social-affairs/20131005/lausd-firings-mount-since-miramonte-scandal

LAUSD'S IPAD FIASCO - IT'S A QUESTION OF PRIORITIES

Prince and the pauper.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) In the Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain, the pauper passing as a prince uses the powerful Great Seal of England to open walnuts, because he doesn't know its power or how else to use it. The issuance of obscenely overpriced IPads to all LAUSD students is reminiscent of this joke, because it presupposes that generationally deprived and social promoted students have sufficient mastery of enough prior grade-level standards to take meaningfully advantage of the exceptional potential that these devices have. Alas, nothing could be further from the truth. Putting a glitzy IPad bandage over the festering sore that is LAUSD yet again begs the question of just how long can these fools running this school district be allow free reign before somebody with the authority to intercede notices that Emperor Deasy has no clothes.
