MAYBE LAUSD CAN'T TEACH CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS BECAUSE IT DOESN'T USE THEM

It is virtually impossible to have an intelligent discussion of what needs to be done to finally fix the Los Angeles Unified School District's (LAUSD) generationally failed public education system, if those in power and addressing the problem continue to accept without any critical analysis the unsubstantiated, misleading, and often downright dishonesty claims, demands, and policies of Superintendent John Deasy and his predecessors and likely successors.

It is disheartening to see a virtuoso like Deasy playing the intellectually challenged LAUSD Board where in every interaction they lose by uncritically buying into everything he says without any relevant questioning. As regrettable as this is, after so many years of watching this one-sided process, it is not surprising because the LAUSD Board is not alone in their failure to apply any critical analysis to what Deasy spouts without any factual support. 

As the membership of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) continues to decline, President Warren Fletcher and the rest of the leadership of UTLA never question any of Deasy's nonsensical assertions that remain the unchallenged foundation of his public education non-reform policy:

1. According to Deasy, teacher job performance should have student standardized test performance as a component of the teacher's evaluation. Perdaily has continually posed the following hypothetical question that Fletcher and Co. never seem to get around to posing to Deasy and the District: If a student has been socially promoted year after year to arrive in my 12th grade Government class with a 3rd grade reading ability, should my professional career be dependent on how this student does in my class or on a standardized test that the student is objectively unprepared to take- whose responsible? Given this reality, which holds a teacher solely responsible for the LAUSD failed system of public education, is it reasonable that teachers would fix assessments to avoid losing their jobs? Not desirable, but foreseeable.

2. According to Deasy, he should be able to summarily get rid of teachers solely based on charges of crimes against students. Again, neither UTLA nor the media ever pose the question: Is a teacher entitled to due process of law that presumes them innocent until proven guilty by a preponderance of the (verified- sworn to under penalty of perjury) evidence, where LAUSD has the burden of proving any wrongdoing within a reasonable period of time and not the protracted present process designed to stall and financially starve teachers into resigning or settling, because they cannot financially sustain the financial burden of fighting an illegal and clearly unjust process.

The Los Angeles Times' Howard Blum and The Daily News' Barbara Jones also eschew any real reporting based on hard facts or anything but softball questions. Rather they continue to shill for Deasy by failing to apply any critical analysis to their "reporting" of Deasy's canned reality- the latest example of which is Deasy's bogus resignation story that now clearly shows in retrospect that Deasy never had any intention of resigning, but only sought to manipulate the intellectually challenged Board- that supposedly has a majority not in his favor of him- into extending his contract. So if the Board was against him, how did Deasy get them to extend his contract?

I talked to a fly who attended the closed-door deliberations of the LAUSD Board yesterday and this fly told me that Deasy had first proposed leaving in February 2014, but remaining as a consultant for his successor at the same salary of $330,000 a year. So the fly told me that the Board thought is was a good deal to keep Deasy as superintendent for the same price. With thought processes like this, one can only hope that Mel Brooks at 87 years of age has one more comedy in him where he could cast the members of the LAUSD Board. Maybe a working title could be Blazing IPads.

YOU are a funny man! This subject of course is NOT!! I cannot believe day by day that I made a conscious decision to become a Lausd teacher...it has become such a nightmare and all the teachers I speak to know it, but are too afraid and too tired to fight anymore - Utla as we all know is a useless organization , that along with Deasy and Gates/Broad/Bloomberg and Co will destroy and end public education and the so called 'informed' populous our forefathers dreamed of. I don't know how any change of lasting and beneficial substance can be as long as the public allows all this to go on - it's easy to blame a teacher, we are on the ground..it is impossible to blame the silent toxins of the rich and powerful..

That's funny in a sad way Lenny. Keeping this deform superintendent is telling the taxpayers of Los Angeles that the board of Deasy is keeping the ipad program. We need a state investigation of the program and all parties who were part of this deal should be fired, board of Deasy included. Whether they explain the hell out of all the adjustments they will make, its still a BAD deal for us. Grassroots will have to rise up to stop this, the board of deasy is part of the scam.
