STEVE BARR TO RUN FOR LA. MAYOR- ANY GREEN DOT CHARTER SKELETONS IN HIS CLOSET?

Steve Barr.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) The just announced candidacy of Green Dot Charter School founder Steve Barr for the mayor of the City Los Angeles next year might just be a blessing in disguise because a campaign between Barr and present L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti will have an almost impossible task of keeping their equally abysmal records on public and charter education out of the public debate. Could this finally lead to some overdue reform? In reality, when it comes to public education policy, there isn't a nickel's worth of difference between present Mayor Garcetti's unwillingness to address and reign in clearly and long failed public education policies at LAUSD and Steve Barr's equally failed model of supposedly viable public charter education, which in reality is as bad or worse than LAUSD, if you don't fudge the stats.

BILL AS FIRST LADY- A REAL REASON TO VOTE FOR HILLARY?

Bill Clinton as first lady.jpeg
In watching a recent Frontline presentation covering the respective lives of 2016 presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, it dawned on me that while voting for Hillary might have reasonably been construed as only just the latest example of...

AN OPEN LETTER TO NOAM CHOMSKY

Noam Chomsky2.jpg
Dear Professor Chomsky, As you approach your 88th birthday on December 7th of this year, I must confess that as a 69 year old whose memory is predictably starting to wane, I am all the more in awe of your ability to what seems to be effortlessly pull events together from our history into what I believe to be one of the most coherent and comprehensive analyses and explanations of where we now stand in the decline and likely fall of the American empire- seen in the context of those empires and societies that preceded us in declining to the same regrettable end. However, what I believe you also see is that given the unprecedented scope of American economic and military power and with things like global warming looming as a direct result of close to two hundred years of unbridled corporate power making decisions based solely on short-term capital gain is that this likely fall of the American empire could actual pose a real threat to continued human habitation of this planet as a viable species.

MINORITY EDUCATION- STILL NOT VERY AFFIRMATIVE ACTION- WHY?

Nevermind.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español) When it comes to affirmative action designed to supposedly redress generations of entrenched racial discrimination in our society that is still the rule in our de facto segregated public schools, the recently Supreme Court decided Fisher vs. University of Texas at Austin et.al. misses the point for many reasons. First, when it comes to White university applicants like Abigail Fisher, who filed a case of discrimination based on giving preference to a minority student over her for admission to the University of Texas at Austin (UTA), I have always felt that students like Fisher- even though it requires her personal sacrifice- should now understand and finally have some empathy for what minority students must have felt in pre-civil rights America where they were either systematically excluded as a matter of law or not given enough of a quality K12 education to be competitive in the first place for the few schools that would accept them.

George Lakoff- A Neoliberal in Progressive Clothing

Dr. George Lakoff.jpg
To Dr. George Lakoff: I write this critique in response to your article regarding why people are supporting Donald Trump. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/george-lakoff/understanding-trump_b_11144938.html Much of your analysis has weight in terms of how language is used to frame narratives for electoral...

BERKELEY UNIFIED AGREES TO OUTSIDE INVESTIGATOR AT BEHEST OF BNAACP

Berkeley Unified Logo.jpg
In response to incessant credible allegations of endemic racism and disperate treatment of both African-American employees and students, the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) has agreed to hire an independent outside investigator to look into these claims and report back to them in detail in a timely manner. Berkeley Unified Logo.jpg Not only has the Berkeley NAACP pushed for such an investigation, they have also made a suggestion as to who might independently conduct such an investigation, while laying out what should be the scope of what such an independent investigator might look into. While the BNAACP initially only took exception with the effects of racism on employees and students, what they now intelligently seek to have BUSD implement is an investigation into the causes and a BUSD structure of checks and balances that doesn't seem to have functioned for years. How could such alleged illegal behavior have continued for so long without any awareness or appropriate action being taken by the BUSD Board or any other entity within the district? To get a better idea of the scope of investigation that BNAACP has asked for and BUSD Board has tacitly agreed to, please check out the following link: Naacp Follow Up 6_3_16.pdf

AVERAGE DAILY ATTENDANCE (ADA)- THE ENGINE DRIVING FAILURE AND FRAUD AT LAUSD AND ELSEWHERE AROUND THE COUNTRY

ADA.png
(Mensaje se repite en Español) If you sat down and tried to think of the worst possible system for funding public education, I don't think you could come up with anything worse or more problematic than Average Daily Attendance (ADA), which is a public school funding model exclusively based on how many warm butts there are in public school seats on any given day. So why is this system of public school funding so bad? Let me count some of the ways:
