IS AUSTIN BEUTNER'S LACK OF EDUCATION BACKGROUND HIS GREATEST ASSET AT LAUSD?

Austin Beutner.jpgIn the selection of Austin Beutner as the new Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) permanent superintendent last Tuesday, it seems that those against his choice found his biggest deficit to be the fact that he didn't have an education background. But on the contrary, could this not actually be his greatest potential asset in heading up LAUSD and finally turning around its entrenched and incestuously corrupt LAUSD bureaucracy? Up until now this dysfunctional bureaucracy has only allowed those from within the public education establishment to "succeed" at LAUSD by their vowing to find no fault with anything they were asked to do by those above them in the LAUSD food chain of dysfunction and corruption.

Not surprisingly, Beutner's opponent for the superintendent position Vivian Ekchian could be the poster girl of this longstanding entrenched, incestuous, and dysfunctional LAUSD culture of going along to get along, that has LAUSD on the verge of bankruptcy on both its business and educational functions. Ekchian, who had moved up to being acting LAUSD Superintendent, which put her in line for being considered for the top superintendent job at LAUSD, never found a document put on her desk for signature that she would not sign, even though she had no idea as to its content. All she ever had to know is that those above her wanted this done and she would do it. So by the time she got to the Interim Superintendent position at LAUSD, she literally had no skill with a truly executive business function, like questioning what she was being asked to do and, therefore, became a rubber stamp for bad policies.

While I know very little about Mr. Beutner, except that he is a very sucessful businessman with a background as an investment banker, deputy mayor of Los Angeles under Villaraigosa, and publisher of the Los Angeles Times, I would argue that while the purpose of LAUSD has been to educate all its students, this has been made objectively impossible to the point of emnient bankruptcy by an entrenched Ekchianesque bureaucracy's mismanagement from those at LAUSD with only an education background and without the skill to run what is objectively one of the largest businesses in the City of Los Angeles, when measured by how many millions- if not billions- of dollars of goods and services it purchases.

Unlike his predecessors like Ekchian, Cortines, Deasy, and the others who moved up the career ladder at LAUSD in escaping from the classroom, Beutner is already successful and not the captive of legal and business interests that have continued to distort LAUSD business and educational policy for years in the sole pursuit of lining their own pockets. Sadly, this LAUSD model of dysfunction in public education has become the rule and not the exception around this country, whose very future existence as anything even remotely resembling a democracy is being threatened, if LAUSD's function as an educationally well-run business is not finally allowed to come to fruition by Austin Beutner- assuming of course that he is for real and not also in the pocket of Eli Broad & Co.

Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again with the expectation of getting a different result.
