Online "Learning" Revisited

Tip: "...The unaddressed lax security allows for students to cheat at any time. Some students have friends complete the assessment portion. Some students even have their parents complete that portion, several admit to it. Students with decent computer skills keep the lessons open and search for answers. While a majority of the students use trial and error, knowing that a majority of the questions will be repeated."

Adams VS. LAUSD Revisited...

ladyjustice.jpg
We recently received a comment regarding an earlier post on perdaily and my own rather continuing tenuous situation at LAUSD:

"Gloria Allread's firm took a hit in the Adams vs. LAUSD case where it went to trial, the jury came back unanimously in her favor, they polled the jury on each count, they were unanimous in her favor, and then the judge did non obstante verdicto- he vacated the jury verdict which forced the case up on appeal. By that time Allread's firm was out of it and had out of pocket losses on the case of $70,000." READ THE RESPONSE...

Teacher 'Coaches' Get Paid To Do Nails, Talk On Phone Or Just Disappear

coaches.jpg
Does anyone have a good coaching story? Reader 'Resident of the Land of Babble' describes just how elusive -- and unnecessary -- coaches seem to be. As a matter of fact, the coaching program would be the first item they would scrap from the LAUSD budget, and it's hard to argue otherwise when most of the scenes our reader describes sound like an episode of The Office. Read the email and you'll easily understand why...

PALI Charter Parent Writes Us...(Read The Letter)

parentletter.jpg
As a parent whose children went and go to Palisades Charter High School, I have been trying to understand what caused the turmoil that the school has been going through during the last several months. I have visited almost all the board meetings since the beginning of the school year. Even though I do not belong in the loud group of parents who attend board meetings to show how bad their manners are, I sometimes have to control myself in order not to shout out: why you all can't see what is happening right in front of you?!

LAUSD Shaking Teacher Down For $500

moneyback.jpg
Teacher Nathan MacAinsh didn't notice anything different about his paycheck back in December, but according to a letter he recently received from LAUSD, a sick time error means he owes the district $521. He's now been given ten days to respond or they'll deduct the entire amount from his next paycheck -- adding further insult -- if he chooses to dispute the error it could will take months to resolve, and he'd still have to cough up the money in the meantime. So... LAUSD makes payroll mistake... LAUSD waits two months to admit payroll mistake... LAUSD blames you for their payroll mistake. READ THE EMAIL...

The Friday Mailbag: A Sampling Of This Week's Email

mail2.jpg
Every Friday (starting now) I'll open the mailbag up and give readers the chance to have their thoughts, suggestions and/or well-written responses posted for all to debate. The emails we receive are posted almost word for word (minus most typos). Long story short, don't go blaming us if/when you angrily disagree. Read our mail...

My Principal Janet Seary: "This Is War...I Like War" (Read Our Emails)

toysoldier.jpg
Via Lenny: About 2 years ago, I applied for an out-of-classroom position at Central High School, which required a cleared teaching credential and tenure with LAUSD. Nonetheless, my Principal Janet Seary gave this position to Nestor Albert Vargas, who at the time of his appointment had only an expired emergency credential, which only allowed him to work as a substitute. Because I didn't accept this unjust action in clear violation of the LAUSD/UTLA Collective Bargaining Agreement and subsequently filed a PERB action against my principal and LAUSD for allowing it to take place, all hell broke loose.

BREAKING: LAUSD Internal Memo 'Layoffs, Budget Cuts, Pay Reductions' For Classified Workers (View Memo)

TopSecretClassified.jpg
Is it possible for LAUSD to declare bankruptcy? It is hard to imagine that some Chapter 11 like reorganization of the District wouldn't be better than what presently exists and continues to cause loss to students, teachers, and now Central Office and Facilities staff who can expect a 20% personnel reduction and a 50% operational budget reduction. Classified Employee Tells Us: We Have It Rough Too

work.jpg
By now most of you know about the email we got out to about 20,000 LAUSD employees. Well maybe it sounded a little too pro-teacher. There are tons of pitiful teachers out there. And the Union... let's not even go down that road (yet). But in the cosmic tug-o-war  between LAUSD and the Union, there's a whole constituency that goes ignored, everyone who isn't a teacher or administrator. What did I learn? The people at UTLA can be so petty.

Maybe LAUSD Has Money To Burn? Did You Ever Consider That?

moneyburn2.jpg
We asked teachers to send us examples of what agitates them about LAUSD. My inbox exploded violently minutes later. It seems that with proposed layoffs, furlough days and cuts cuts cuts, what you guys hate seeing most is -- drum roll please --  money being wasted. So the real question is: Does LAUSD waste money or are teachers just cheap? Kidding. Read the emails.

MAIL: Principal Knows Best

mail2.jpg
A faculty member (from an unnamed school) writes in with this account of a principal who felt a pricey reading coach was needed for the upcoming school year. Just about the entire staff showed up to oppose the budget, as they felt literacy coaches hadn't worked in the past, and they simply didn't have the money to waste...

MAIL: A current LAUSD teacher writes to us....

A lot of teachers want to provide insight to the not so current crisis in education. Here's what one teacher sent us. Want to share your thoughts, complaints or general experience within the school system? Write to us too! tips@perdaily.com (you can remain anonymous)
